Trauma-Informed Schools
Many children have experienced adverse life events which impact on their brain development, behaviour, self-regulation and cognition. Regular behaviour strategies are often ineffective in helping these children and there is an increasing need for trauma-informed practices and frameworks in EC Centres and schools to better support them. This is a relatively new concept in NZ schools, but is widely practiced in other countries such as the UK and USA. There is a growing body of research and knowledge about best practice that can upskill schools to understand and help, not only these children, but all children.
If you are interested in professional development opportunities for your staff to grow their knowledge and skills in trauma-informed practice, please contact Rose to discuss this.
Traumatic Incidents
Responding to crisis events can be challenging and stressful. When a traumatic incident impacts on the school or EC community the way it is managed can minimise further risk, strongly influence people's recovery, and help the early learning service or school return to normal operations as quickly as possible. Every educational facility should have appropriate policies, systems and processes in place, to ensure the safety and well-being of children / young people and staff.
Rose has over 20 years training and experience in supporting schools before, during and after traumatic incidents. Her work is based on, and aligns with the information and resources provided by the Ministry of Education.
